The Volcano Vaporizer is designed to heat herbs to a temperature of 226 – 446 degrees F which creates vapors below the combustion level where smoke is formed. The vapors were found to contain mostly the chemical component whereas combusted product contains numerous other chemicals including carcinogenic toxins commonly found in tobacco smoke.  This means that using a Volcano bypasses the toxins that are byproducts of combusted material. The vaporizer surrounds the herb with heated air which releases the active ingredients while preventing harmful substances from burning.   Once heated, the herb is vaporized and then the vapor is funneled through a valve into a collection balloon.  After the balloon is full, you separate it from the base, insert an inhaling valve and inhale.  The valve can be closed in between draws on the vapor. 

There are two types of valve and balloon attachments.  One is the Easy Valve which comes with the balloon already attached.  The Solid Valve allows you to buy spare balloons and attach them as needed.  If you are new to using a Volcano, the Easy Valve is a good way to get started.  When you are comfortable using the machine you can switch to the more economical Solid Valve connections.

You also have a choice between a digital and dial analog-style temperature setting and readout on your vaporizer.  You will pay less for the analog style system, but whether you lose any heat control is up for debate.  Some would argue that the LED digital readout is more likely to fail.
